Woven Into Being
Ekmit began as a dream during my Design Degree at the Srishti School of Art and Design, Bangalore, in 2005. Immersed in Southern India’s slow, mindful pace and raised in a vibrant Punjabi household in Delhi, I found myself straddling contrasting worlds—both shaping my creative soul.
I made deliberate choices early on, interning with fashion legends like Abraham & Thakore, Raghavendra Rathore, and Sonam Dubal, pioneers of sustainability before it became a buzzword. Their mastery of storytelling through minimalist, timeless designs deepened my love for draping, textures, and detailing.
A transformative year in Jaisalmer with vintage textile curator Kamlesh Vyas expanded my palette from earthy tones to vivid hues like bright turquoise and hot pink. Assisting in curating The Textiles of India exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum was a privilege, but it was the cultural richness of Jaisalmer that truly captivated me. The living fort, heritage havelis, and craft traditions—puppet makers stitching scraps into art, the bold tattoos of Rudalis, and the dramatic skirts of Kalberia women—awakened a deep appreciation for forgotten threads and the beauty of repurposing.
In 2013, Ekmit was officially born, registered on papers and retailed from reputed designer spaces across India.. Rooted in 15 years of exploration in the Indian fashion and textile industry, it reflects a journey of learning, observing, and collaborating with artisans and designers across India.
At Ekmit, nothing is mass-produced; every piece is handcrafted with love and care, celebrating fabric’s possibilities and the stories it tells.
