About Riya
Was my fathersâs film production company. My father was an Actor, Writer, Director, Pilot (unable to apply for commercial licence) and lastly a Business Person.
His was a story from richest of riches to rags to riches.
Fearless and intellectual.
Childlike and generous.
My initial childhood was mostly without him, as he lived in Bombay, and I had serious issues in accepting him, whenever he returned, He was in a new character.
World cinema, documentaries, Mandi House, and Prithvi Theatre were his life, and my childhood was all just about that.
He communicated in a few words, and I was a storyteller.
I think I embarrassed him often, laughing loudly like a dinosaur, for soft-spokenness wasn’t my cup of chai.
Since he lost his father at a stage, where everything was picture perfect and things started falling apart post that, he was very super practical in raising me, A part of Him, which made me hate him as a child. But slowly and steadily, He was training my mind to not be a hoarder of emotions, success, relationships and even knowledge.
This I realised, when He passed away all of a Sudden.
Saying goodbye was not his thing, Each time He stepped out, He told us, âMiltey Hai Phirâ (I will see you again).
He was quite reluctant to pass on Ekmit to me, as a name for my Design Label, as He thought that it would be a flop venture for me as well, as it was for Him.
And when He finally thought of granting me permission, he first interrogated me, why I decided to use Ekmit.
I told him that all around the world, An artist dies either in Isolation or out of Insecurity. Ekmit to me means âEkmattâ, which means Teamwork and I want to create a platform of and with like minded people.
As today, it’s been exactly two years of Him, gone from this world to another and most of you might not be aware of what Ekmit means.
